There is something sublimely pleasing about taking a full
rest day during a long cycling trip, especially when it’s filled with horseback
riding! After breakfast, Sho, Saya and I
rode horses for a few hours on trails through a cow pasture and along a bluff
with a stunning view. We were led by
Patty Worth (who owns the ranch with her husband Zack) and her son-in-law Ben
Anderson, who stayed close to Saya throughout the ride. Ben is competing in the local rodeo and rides
a horse with such ease, he may have been born in a saddle. Sho cantered for the first time, and Saya
trotted on her own for a while. They
both asked me if they could continue to ride horses when we return to NYC – I
suspect we’ve found a new weekend activity.
We got another treat today, attending the rodeo in nearby
Helena. Saya loved the barrel racing,
and Sho thought the bull riding was “intensely cool.” We hitched a ride to the rodeo with Jim and
Simone Miller and their two daughters, ages 8 and 12, trading jokes and riddles
on the drive and making new friends we hope to stay in touch with.
