Day 20 Daunted Courage, July 19, 2013

Route:  Denton to Geraldine, MT

Saya’s quote of the day: “Ghosts are just like clouds.  You can’t stab a cloud, and you can’t stab a ghost.  But clouds don’t have faces or fangs, and they aren’t scary.  So, really, the only way clouds and ghosts are the same is that you can’t stab them.”

We enjoyed dramatic views on today’s ride, which included an imposing butte off in the distance and a 2-mile descent down a winding 8% grade hill surrounded by looming cliffs.  We took at a break at the bar in Square Butte, which will host “The 4th Annual Square Butte Redneck Olympics” tomorrow.  Contests include the tire discus, gas siphoning contest and more.  They even flew in Tom Guest, a musician from Philadelphia (and very cool guy).  He gave us his latest CD entitled, “Parade of Fools.”  Alas, we couldn’t stay for the Redneck Olympics.  We continued on to Geraldine, MT, a small town with a bar/cafĂ© and pool – Sho and Saya said that’s everything they need to be happy.  It’s the little stuff…

I chatted for a while with Roger and Lita Buck, ranchers from Geraldine who also volunteer as firefighters traveling around the country putting out wildfires.  Their stories were fascinating.

Here are some pics:

Saya asked us to pull over the bikes, so that she could draw a picture

Here's what she drew. "We saw cool budrflis" [butterflies]

Our lunch spot today

That's Sho ahead in the distance on today's 2-mile, 8% descent

  1. I love Saya's quotes. Please keep on including them! Too bad you couldn't stay for the Red Neck Olympics -- would have loved to hear all about it!
